Retired Covington County District Judge Trippy McGuire of Opp, Alabama, teaches fourth graders the story of William Weatherford, known in Alabama history as the Creek Indian Red Eagle. Judge McGuire talks with Carolyn Hutcheson of In Focus about Weatherford's legendary leap into the Alabama River astride his horse, Arrow, to escape the American soldiers who pursued him. Judge McGuire is also author of the book, "A Roaring Twenties Flapper Who Broke Glass Ceilings: Winnie Wright in the Early Boomtown Years of Opp, Alabama."

On January 19 and 21, Opera Birmingham will present the world premiere of "Touch,"a new opera about Alabama's Helen Keller, the beloved deaf-blind international figure and advocate. Co-librettist Marianna MottNewirth talks with In Focus host Carolyn Hutcheson about writing Keller's story andincluding lesser-known facts about her life. Newirth's own professional career has been transformed, as she now serves as executive producer of New York's first disability-affirmative opera company. The opera, "Touch," is sold-out for both performancesin Birmingham.

In part two of his interview about bald and golden eagles, geoscientist and researcher Mike McTee of Missoula, Montana, talks with In Focus host Carolyn Hutcheson about how the use of lead bullets by gamehunters can have devastating effects on scavengers like eagles, that eat the remains.Mike McTee's book is "Wilted Wings, A Hunter's Fight for Eagles." Lead bullet fragments from game meat can also get into the food chain and affect human intellectual development. State wildlife and conservation agencies are educating hunters about the use copper bullets as analternative to lead bullets. This interview was part of The Storyline book series.

Long School of Music at Troy University, talks about her career and her mission to bring choral music to students, concert audiences, radio listeners, communities, and patrons of the arts. On January 19th, she will be inducted into the 2024 Alabama Music Educators Association Hall of Fame.

On National Eagle Day and The Storyline book series, Geoscientist and researcher Mike McTee of Missoula, Montana, talks with In Focus host Carolyn Hutcheson about his research into how eagles are being poisoned by the lead from hunters' bullets when the  raptors eat what hunters leave after killing deer and other game animals.  His book is "Wilted Wings, A Hunter's Fight for Eagles."  This is Part One of a two-part interview.  Part Two deals with state wildlife agencies and various organizations that are urging hunters to use copper bullets, since lead can get into the human food chain and cause devastating health effects.
